What does it mean when a company offers kosher products?
Kosher foods are prepared and processed in a way that is deemed correct according to Jewish Halakhic law. There is a set of rules with regard to what types of animals can be consumed, and how foods can be prepared. For instance meat is not to be cooked with dairy, and only certain meats are allowed. If the food purchased at a store is labeled as Kosher, then you know that it was prepared properly and only contains types of food that are allowed by the Jewish law. This takes some of the guess work out for those shopping at a grocery store. To be labeled as Kosher, the producer must have a consultant from the Jewish community, such as a Rabbi, approve the product. Most companies contact the Orthodox Union to approve Kosher products. If approved through them, the product will have an ‘OU’ on the package.
