What does it mean to sit during free choice? Will they sit at recess?
Free choice is offered every afternoon. Each child chooses the center/s they would like to spend their time. They are free to rotate from center to center as long as there is an opening. Due to crowd control centers are limited to three students a piece. The star of the day is called to choose first and then the remainder of the class is randomly called. If a child has pulled a card, this is when they must sit. I have found this to be very effective. The child must wait until their time is up and chances are the center they want to go to is already full. Recess is never taken away from a child! So much of their day they are told what to do and when to do it. Recess is their time to let their hair down and just be a kid!
