What does it mean that my albumin level was elevated?
Whew, I just answered this in my response to your other (similar) question. Copied and pasted from myself for your convenience. Blood has a protein called albumin which essentially is an osmotic agent produced by the liver that helps keep fluid in blood vessels since albumin cannot pass through capillaries. Albumin also has other functions in binding drugs and other substances. If your albumin is high, it is likely that you are simply dehydrated (your albumin level is constant, but the plasma volume is less resulting in a higher concentration of albumin). Low albumin, on the other hand, could be due to malnutrition. It is a long term indicator of nutrition (pre-albumin being a more short term one). Of course, there are other reasons like liver disease that could lead to low albumin. Sources: http://en.wikipedia.
