What does it mean in the indian caste system that it is a “mutually sustaining system”?
If a society at the time of creation of the system were to survive, it had to have this segregation done. Brahmins were required for learning all those rigmarole of ceremonies, shlokas, and everything that was “brain based” -the elites. Kshtriyas were required to keep the domain free from invaders, Fighting their souls out literally.- the security. Vaishya were needed to operate finance, merchandise and trade. – the merchants Sudras were most important in keeping the wheels of all the other top castes working without a hitch, they would do all so called menial tasks which were necessary for living but considered too lowly. – the servers Therefore for the said set-up of a society to function smoothly, these four divisions with their umpteen sub-divisions were formed. Despite their different vocations, each caste therefore had to rely on other to pass its existence peacefully.
