active immunity occurs when the person is exposed to a live pathogen, develops the disease, and becomes immune as a result of the primary immune response whereas passive immunity is provided when the body is given antibodies rather than producing them itself. A newborn baby has passive immunity to several diseases, such as measles, mumps and rubella, from antibodies passed from its mother via the placenta.
