What does Instructional Reading Level mean?

Instructional reading level means the level at which a child can read and understand text with the SUPPORT of the classroom teacher. Some students may be in grade 2, but are reading at a 3rd grade level. Likewise, others may be in grade 3, but reading instructionally at only the 2nd grade level. Teachers can adjust instruction and provide the appropriate amount of support so that students can be successful while reading grade level material. In order to do that teachers need to be aware of the reading levels of their students. PALS testing provides some good information to guide teachers in meeting the needs of their students.
