What does Hoodoo mean?
Hoodoos are oddly-shaped pedestals of earth or pillars of rock that develop through erosion by wind and water, especially in areas where the sedimentary layers alternate between soft and hard material, for example in horizontal strata of shale and sandstone. Typically a column of stone is created when a hard shale cap-rock on top protects softer underlying sandstone from erosion. What does this have to do with the ski area? Not much, as far as we can tell. From what we know the name was meant to apply to the mountain next to our ski area, which is currently called Hayrick. Hayrick would more properly be called a “butte”, but apparently was refered to by some as a “hoodoo”. Our ski mountain is in the shape of a “hayrick” or mound of hay in a field. Some how, at some point, the names were reversed on the map. Now the “hayrick” shaped mountain is called Hoodoo and the butte or “hoodoo” shaped mountain is called Hayrick. Where is Hoodoo?
