What does hematocrit mesure?
Hematocrit is the percent of whole blood that is Red Blood Cells (RBC’s). The normal values for adult men and women are different (male and female babies and young children have the same normal range): Adult normal values are: Males – 42-52%; Females – 35-47%. The normal range for 2 year-olds is 35-44% and for 6 year-olds it is 31-43%. The test is significant for monitoring anemia and other conditions involving too few or too many RBC’s.
