A. New piercings heal in 2 stages. The initial healing time is while you are strictly following your aftercare instructions. Initial healing is over when the body has produced new cells which form around the inside of the piercing. At this point the piercing is no longer an open wound. Around this time it could be advisable to change the jewelry and lessen cleanings but first consult with your piercer. Do keep in mind though that this newly formed tissue is still very delicate and easily damaged. You must still be careful with it and not be too rough on the piercing. If it becomes damaged at this point it can revert back to a healing piercing. Secondary healing is the toughening up of these new cells so that it becomes more like the rest of your body. At the end of this stage your piercing is healed and can handle some rough treatment.
