What does having a rare blood type mean?

Some confusion here. O+ is not by any means a rare blood type, at least not in the US or the UK. About 4/5 of both countries are Rhesus positive like you and 1/5 Rhesus negative. This is unrelated to the ABO system. It’s dangerous to *repeatedly* give Rhesus positive blood to someone with Rhesus negative blood – less dangerous the other way round. O and A blood types are the most common types in the US and UK. See here: http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0877658… So more people donate O blood than AB blood, but then more injured people need O blood as well. So it’s not surprising if their stocks of O are lower than a rarer blood type. ETA There are also specific rare blood types outside the ABO & Rhesus classifications. Unless you’ve been told you have such a blood type it’s unlikely you do. The blood donation people panic about blood stocks so that patients don’t have to.
