What does GOLF stand for?
Golf doesn’t stand for anything. Wikipedia gives the following etymology: The word Golf in its English form, was first mentioned in writing in 1457 on a Scottish statute of forbidden games as gouf, possibly derived from the Scots word goulf (variously spelled) meaning “to strike or cuff”. This word may, in turn, be derived from the Dutch word kolf, meaning “bat”, or “club”, and the Dutch sport of the same name. The idea that “golf” is an acronym from “gentlemen only, ladies forbidden” is false – this is a folk etymology. And Snopes agrees.

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!!!!! that is an Urban legend!!!!! The word Golf evolved (Like most words) from other languages. Why People perpetuate this nonsense still mystifies me! While it is true that in the early days of golf it was primarily a game played by men……The word golf derives from the Dutch kolf meaning stick, club or bat. As an addendum…..Most clubs….if they have a mens night or day….will also have a ladies day. Also….I for one, and I know there are many others like me, actually enjoy playing golf with the ladies. Its an interesting change of pace and quite enjoyable.
