What does GCSE Media Studies entail?
We follow the AQA GCSE specifications. The GCSE is made up of two components; Coursework and a Controlled Test. Each component is worth 50% of the GCSE. The coursework component involves two sections as follows: Three assignments, equally weighted and worth 25% in total. These are undertaken in Year Ten and current assignments cover Pop Music, Lifestyle Magazines and Action Adventure Films. A Practical Production, worth 25%. This is embarked upon by small groups. It entails the development of a real media product aimed at a mass audience. This year, for the first time, we are encouraging all students to produce a moving image practical production either for television or film. Students are not expected to produce a feature length film or a whole television programme of course. However, they must produce enough to show their understanding of the media and how it works as well as demonstrating their own practical skills.
