What Does Gallus Mean?
Gallus refers to genus of fowls including the common fowl. It also consists of various other fowls like Red Junglefowl, Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Grey Junglefowl and Green Junglefowl. This genus is believed to have evolved from the south-eastern part of Europe. In the prehistoric times birds belonging to this genus was scattered all over Eurasia. Thus Gallus is a genus of common domesticated birds like chicken and its related forms. The Gallus gallus or the Red Jungle fowl is the ancestor of all the domestic chickens. It is found in countries like India and Sri Lanka as well as other parts of South East Asia. The genus Gallus birds are a part of the Phasianidae. They belong to the Galliformes order of birds.
