What does Forensic Psychiatry deal with?
The field is comprised of three distinct but overlapping areas that deal with: – specifically “forensic” issues such: Criminal Responsibility, Fitness to Stand Trial, Dangerous or Long term Offenders, Expert Witness, Ontario Review Board, etc. – clinical criminology issues such as: Paraphilias, Impulse Control Disorders, Sex Offending, Violence, Risk Assessment& Risk Management, Aggression, Psychopathy, etc. – mental health law issues such as: Consent & Capacity, Patients Rights, Confidentiality, Duty to Warn/Inform, Community Treatment Orders, Substitute Decision Makers, etc. Who works in Forensic Psychiatry? A forensic psychiatrist is a fully trained psychiatrist who often has an additional year or more of training & study specifically in Forensic Psychiatry.
