What does first degree (second, third etc.) burns mean?
According to iVilliage.com: Burns may be classified as first, second, or third degree according to their severity. 1st degree burns cause the skin to become red but cause very little swelling and usually no scarring. 2nd degree burns cause the destruction of the upper layer of skin (the epidermis) and a minor part of the second layer (the dermis). These burns are particularly painful because they expose the microscopic nerves of the skin. 3rd degree burns are the most serious. They destroy the epidermis and most if not all of the dermis. Because nerves are destroyed along with the skin layers, these severe burns may not be especially painful. They usually have a charred or pale appearance and are very susceptible to infection. ALWAYS SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION for any 3rd degree burns or any burns involving the face, hands, feet or groin area. Don’t “pop” any blisters that may form, keep open burns covered, and take regular painkillers for pain. Hope this helps!
