In 1992 the Community set up a system designed to protect and capitalise on the value of agri-food products. The intention is to protect quality products from unfair competition, boost diversity of production and enable the consumer to be correctly informed of product characteristics. At present three types of name are recognised at Community level: The protected designation of origin (PDO) recognising a product originating in a specified geographical area. All production stages take place in that area and recognised know-how is used. The product’s quality or characteristics are primarily or exclusively the outcome of the operation of natural and human factors in that area. The protected geographical indication (PGI), also recognising a product of high reputation originating in a specified geographical area. Some if not all of its production takes place in the area.
