However, the full name was dropped in February 1985 when the company adopted a new corporate name — ESPN, Inc. — and a new logo. Based in Bristol, CT., ESPN is 80 percent owned by ABC, Inc., which is an indirect subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. The Hearst Corporation holds the remaining 20 percent interest in ESPN.

It was founded by Scott Rasmussen and his father Bill Rasmussen, and launched on September 7, 1979. ESPN broadcasts primarily out of its studios in Bristol, Connecticut and is available in over 77 million homes in the United States. The name of the company was shortened to “ESPN Inc.” in February 1985.

However, that name took too long to paint across our chests on game day, so we dropped it in 1985 and adopted a new corporate name — ESPN, Inc.– and a new logo. And by the way, we’re a subsidiary of ABC, Inc., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Co. Also, the Hearst Corporation has a 20% interest in ESPN.
