What does equality and diversity mean?
Many employers publish equal opportunity policies but beyond that few take any further action to ensure that the policy is practised. While an equality policy can stand on its own, it is compliance driven and a reactive approach. When equality embraces diversity the approach becomes proactive. Equality and diversity taken together acknowledge the changing society and business environment in which we live. Equality is concerned with giving everyone a fair chance to fulfil their potential, irrespective of their race, sex etc. Equality is underpinned by legislation. Diversity is a relatively recent term adopted by business. It requires employers’ to recognise that individuals and groups are different and to implement measures to capture and then harness their talents to the best effect for everyone.
