What does Encana do to manage the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing fluids?
As part of the engineered well completion program, Encana specifies the type of fluid to be used in the fracture treatment based on the geology and the geochemistry of the hydrocarbon bearing rock we are accessing. Encana is aware of most of the chemical ingredients in the fluid formulation specified, but not their exact concentration or composition. Encana field supervisors provide quality control/quality assurance oversight of the fracturing operation to help ensure that fracturing operation, including the fluid system utilized, is conducted in conformance with Encana specifications. Encana is actively working with our suppliers to help ensure the fracturing fluids we use are environmentally responsible and are properly managed. We are also improving our ability to better track and report on the chemicals we use in our operations. In response to stakeholder concerns, Encana does not permit the use of 2-butoxyethanol (2-BE) or diesel in our fracturing operations.
