What does “each way mean” in betting?

Hi, it means you are betting for the horse to win with half of your stake and you are betting for a place, i.e 2nd,3rd & sometimes 4th with the other half of your stake. Lets say £20 Each Way on A horse called Red Barrel = £40.00 staked Lets say Red Barrel wins @ 5/1 paying a fifth of the odds for a place Your £20 to win wins a £100, plus your stake back (£20) = £120 return Your place pays £20 (5/1 divided by a 1/5th) plus the stake back = £40 return If your horse lost but was 2nd, it would just pay the place money which returned £40, so you would have broken even.
