E46 is the general model designation for the current generation of 3 series cars. Starting with 1999 production for 323i and 328i (sedans), 2000 production 323 and 328 models (coupe & sedan), 2001 on all 325, 330 and M3 models. E is for “Entwicklung” in German or development (maybe evolution) in English. Pervious 3 series cars were designated as E36, E30, etc.
