What does destratification mean?
Stratification means the layering of different water temperatures throughout the pond usually with warm water on top and cold water on the bottom. Destratification means the mixing of these temperatures until an average temperature is reached. Destratification naturally occurs in Fall or Spring when waters warm and cool respectively, or it can be induced with the use of an aeration system. Having a properly destratified pond will aid in aeration. The top, warmer water is usually more oxygenated (close to the surface of the water) while the colder, dense water is less oxygenated. This can be problematic for fish that are dependent on oxygen as well as the overall health of the pond.
