What does Danelaw mean?
The Danelaw was an agreement which was reached in 886 on the extent of the territory of the Viking invaders – the Danelaw. Lincoln became one and possibly the largest of the Five Boroughs of the East Midlands, together with Stamford, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester. All of them eventually became ‘shires’ – except Stamford, whose shire was incorporated into Lincolnshire. The route was planned to be walked in seven daily stages.
