Cropping a photo mean to cut a photo down to a smaller size. There are many reasons why this is done. One reason is to remove distracting backgrounds. This technique can improve a photo by bringing the viewers focus back onto the subject, by eliminating messy or competing elements within the photo. It is also used to increase the number of photos that can be placed on a page. Not all photos are suitable for cropping. Older heritage or childhood photos that you do not have a negative for should be left intact. To crop these photos its recommended that a duplicate copy be made and the original retained in archival storage. Some older photos may also contain valuable historical information within the background and cropping may loose this record of a past era.
