What does council do when there is a sewage surcharge?
Sunshine Coast Water does a number of things when there is a sewage surcharge, including diverting sewage flows into less inundated parts of the system and getting tankers to pump sewage directly from the system to relieve the pressure on particular pump stations. In addition, work crews contain spills, and clean and disinfect any affected areas. Sunshine Coast Water erects signage to notify residents of sewage spills, and conducts water quality testing to ensure that waterways have acceptable bacteria levels. In some instances, beaches and waterways may be closed to protect public health. Sunshine Coast Water advises all residents and visitors to stay out of waterways during and after a storm event, as the water may contain snags, sharp objects, raw sewage, chemical waste, fallen powerlines and wildlife.
