What does Cisco see as growth areas in optical networking?
Fiber access today is greater than it has ever been before. Carriers now need cost-effective solutions to light, scale, and service these networks while migrating current infrastructures to maximize existing revenue streams and generate new opportunities. The cyclical pattern of the metro and core is very apparent. Increased capacity in fiber optic networks has enabled the use of high-bandwidth data, voice and video applications in the metro, which will fuel the need for incremental capacity gains in the long-haul and extended long-haul networks. These applications are bridging the gap between service providers and their enterprise customers, and metro Ethernet is one such example. We expect continued deployment and adoption of high-speed Ethernet services over a variety of technologies in the metro. Adding to that we’ve seen the further segmentation of the metro where continued efficiency is required in the metro core to achieve lowest cost per bit and multiservice density is critical
