What does “chelate” mean?
Chelation basically is the procedure of reversible binding of a ligand like the chelant, chelator, chelating agent and sequestering agent or complexing agent to a metal ion, shaping a metal complex, the Chelate. The word is usually used for complexes in which the metal is combined by two or more agents of the Chelating agent. The expression chelate was initially used in the year 1920 by Sir Gilbert t. Morgan and as well as by H.D. K. Drew. The adjective chelate, was derived from the Greek word Chele. Nearly all the metal complexes found in the surrounding as well as in nature are bound in the same structure of chelate ring. Chelators are commonly used in chemical analysis, as water softeners, as preservatives and also in medicine.
