I’ve crocheted for years and I think I see the problem. It sounds like you’re making an afghan square by starting in the round. I could be wrong, though, without seeing more of the pattern it’s hard to tell. That doesn’t really matter though… These instructions are giving you both the sequence of stitches (dc, ch2, dc) but also telling you WHERE to place these stitches. In the previous row you were working, you probably have sections where you chained two stitches (ch2). This creates a “space” or “sp”. When the directions tell you to (do something) in a sp, they are telling you to make all of those stitches (the ones in parentheses) in that one space. In your case, it’s a ch2 space. Insert your hook into this space (not in the loops, but under them in the “hole”) and do the (dc,ch2,dc) sequence around the ch2 stitches.
