CDC recommendations state that: • HIV screening should be included in the routine panel of prenatal screening tests for all pregnant women. • HIV screening is recommended after the patient is notified that testing will be performed unless the patient declines (opt-out screening). • Repeat HIV screening in the third trimester is recommended for certain high-risk women and in certain jurisdictions with elevated rates of HIV infection among pregnant women. • Pregnant women should receive oral and written information that includes an explanation of HIV infection, a description of interventions that can reduce HIV transmission from mother to infant and the meanings of positive and negative test results. If a pregnant woman is infected with HIV, there is still an opportunity to prevent transmission to her infant.
