BSD stands for Berkley Software Distribution. BSD was originally developed at University of Califonia at Berkley. UCBerkley was given a DARPA grant for development and some BSD code was integrated into the AT&T Unix and others. You will still see the Berkley copyright notice in current BSD systems thanks to the BSD license.
