If the bloody stool is the only symptom you are seeing, you can rest easy that waiting until regular office hours to make an appointment is a reasonable choice. You will need to take the cat to the vet, but you need not spend the emergency fee. While it is a very dramatic symptom, the three most common reasons for bloody stool are both easily treatable, and not horribly expensive to treat. First is internal parasites, whether microbial or worms. When you call to make an appointment, you can ask how best to collect a stool sample so the vet can test for parasites. Second is “garbage gut” – the insides of your cat’s intestines getting scratched up from the cat ingesting something that is physically rough, such as tough plant matter or particularly crunchy bugs. There isn’t really a test for this, but if your discussion with the vet puts this in the running for a possibility, then the vet *might* prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infections where the intestinal wall has been scratched up
