What does “bilingual education” really mean?
The overall objective of bilingual education is to bring the students to a point of balanced bilingualism, which is the ability to acquire comparable skills using both languages in all the subjects taught in the chosen curriculum. Throughout bilingual education, it is not only a matter of teaching a language; it is equally important to conduct educational activities in that language and to continuously support it by every-day activities, so that the students are learning the language in a natural, direct and contextualized way, similar to how they learned their mother tongue. This kind of a process has to be put in place over time and to be based on a single teaching programme. It will strongly expose students to both cultures.
