What does being overweight mean?
Over the past 30 years, a growing number of children and teenagers have developed weight problems. Today, 9 million kids ages 6 to 19 are overweight. Your child is classified as being at-risk for overweight or overweight based on their Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation. BMI is a calculation that uses height and weight to estimate how much body fat you have. Too much body fat is a problem because it can lead to illnesses and other health problems. BMI, although not a perfect method for judging someone’s weight, is often a good way to check on how a kid is growing. Being overweight puts your child at risk for severe medical problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, social isolation, and even knee or hip disease requiring major surgery.
