what does an unimpacted benthic ecosystem look like?
Dr. Chris Frid Dr. Frid is a lecturer in the Department of Marine and Coastal sciences at the University of Newcastle and he has published extensively on the sustainability of fisheries and the implications for biodiversity. His current research focuses on the dynamics of marine communities and the role of anthropogenic activities in altering these dynamics. Current or recently funded projects include: 1) Fishing impacts on marine ecosystems. Fishing has a long history and removal of fish alters ecological balances and fishing gears can physically disrupt seabed communities. These studies look at assessing the scale of these changes and methods for their management. 2) Long term changes in North Sea ecosystems. Time series, such as the Dove Zooplankton and Benthic time series, provide us with the opportunity to understand the extend and causes of ‘natural’ interannual variation in marine ecosystems and place human disturbances into context. 3) Restoration of benthic communities.
