A design engineer solves a problem by creating something from the materials at hand using a combination of his knowledge of science, math, and engineering principles; his knowledge of similar devices or systems; and his creativity. Schematics might be drawn from scratch, but in reality, there is some combination of the stuff I just identified directing the thoughts. There is a certain amount of trail and error involved, depending on the state of development of the technology, the engineers awareness of it, and the input and creativity of all those involved in the process. An entry level person will be given work to do that is commensurate with thier demonstrated skills towards compeltionof a project, if they are being guided by a fairly senior engineer.
