What Does an EMF Meter Really Measure?
As its name implies, an EMF meter measures electromagnetic fields. As such, there are two types of EMF fields that EMF meters can measure. Almost all EMF meters (specifically Gauss meters or magnetometers) can measure DC magnetic fields (electromagnetic radiation flux density). Most meters can also measure AC fields. AC fields are produced by an alternating electric current. An EMF meter will only measure electromagnetic fields. It will not measure the magnetic field produced by a permanent magnet, unless the magnet is located in close proximity to the meter and is also moving. The motion of the magnet induces electron flow, which the meter may be able to measure. Types of EMF Meters EMF meters can generally be classified as single axis or as tri-field. A single axis meter can only record measurements in a single direction. This means that the meter must be tilted and turned in order to measure an entire EMF field.
