What does an archaeological scheme of work involve?
The level of archaeological work that is required will depend on the size of the development, its location and the likely impact on archaeological deposits. Watching brief This is the lowest level of archaeological monitoring, and by far the most common. The work often comprises a programme of visits by a professional archaeologist during the course of a development. In some instances, where the archaeology is thought to be more sensitive, an archaeologist may need to be in attendance during all below-ground disturbances. Building recording If alterations or demolition of an historic building are likely to reveal evidence for its construction, or of earlier structures, we may request that a photographic and/or drawn record be made prior to the development work, and/or during the alterations or demolition. Evaluation. Where a development is expected to have a significant impact upon archaeological deposits, a field evaluation of the site may be requested in advance of development. In ge
