What does an accredited engineering program mean? What difference does it make if I attend an accredited program or not?
Not to be confused with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSACS) accreditation, engineering accreditation refers to the approval granted to a university by the Accreditation Board on Engineering and Technology (ABET) through the Engineering Accreditation Board (EAC). Accredited engineering programs are monitored on a regular basis to ensure compliance with ABET standards. Many employers require an engineering degree from an accredited institution as a precondition for employment to insure that future employees have the proper academic background. Phases such as fully accredited or completely accredited are meaningless terms since programs are either accredited or they are not.
