What does adulticiding consist of?
At this time, adulticiding in Passaic County is done solely with truck-mounted spray equipment. The technique involves dispensing an ultra-low-volume (ULV) cold pesticide mist. This directly contrasts with the “fogging” done in the past which consisted of dispensing a dense thermal fog at much higher volumes. Although other pesticides may be used, we use a formulation containing the pesticide malathion. This formulation is designed to kill mosquitoes on the wing and it is not intended to be a residual agent. The formulation is an appropriate adulticide for use in residential areas because it is not prone to inducing resistance in mosquito populations, it does not persist for long periods of time in the environment, and is considered to be of low toxicity to humans and other mammals.
