What does ab mean on alto saxaphone music sheets?
If you are seeing an Ab written above a measure of music (most likely jazz) it means that an Ab chord/scale can be played over the measure. The rhythm section is playing a chord that sounds Ab on the alto saxophone. For improvisation, this is giving you a general idea of what you can play at that time to sound good when you aren’t actually reading notes on a page. If you are improvising, this is a time to experiment and see what works for you, and figure out how to make up your own creative, and unique ways to create music.
