What does a vehicle trimmer apprentice do?
An apprentice vehicle trimmer is involved in: • making, installing, repairing, replacing or modifying the seats, upholstery, linings, interior trim, roof and door linings and floor coverings of a vehicle • fitting and sealing door windows and sun roofs • installing side windows using fibreglass panels. Vehicles may include cars, panel vans, trucks, vintage vehicles, buses, caravans, trains, aircraft and boats. As a vehicle trimmer you must be able to: • remove old coverings or fittings from vehicles and take new measurements • select, measure and cut out pieces of fabric, vinyl or leather using shears or electrical cutting tools • sew pieces together using industrial sewing machines • fit trim in vehicles, repair seat covers and manufacture new seat covers • refit, align and check window winding mechanisms, door locks and other interior components • use weather strips and draught sealers to waterproof and dustproof vehicles • manufacture new work following drawings and sketches.
