What does a typical day of work at the Kenya center look like?
A1: Woke up, chatted with some of the kids, checked in with other volunteers Breakfast Distributed morning medications and vitamins Took children to clinic as necessary Worked on assignments from Carol Assisted the cook Played, cuddled, sang with kids Distributed noon and evening medications Kept medical log A2: My typical morning includes waking the children up for school at 5:30 a.m. making sure that they eat breakfast and wash and leave for school by 6:45 a.m. and walking the pre-schoolers to school at 7:15 a.m. We then go into town to answer emails, work on our IHF task teams and shop for center supplies. In the afternoon, I teach English and math classes. Then there is dinner and more classes and tutoring until bed time. There is always something to do. There is leisure time. It may not seem like it from the schedule above, but I enjoy reading and writing and did have time to do both. And the children are always so encouraging and eager to play. It is great. A; Typical working day My typical working day varies. I constantly have people to meet and things to do in town. A lot of the work I did was based around 3 main objectives: Beginning the registration process with the Children’s Office; assuring plumbing, electrical and restoration for the new school building and in the kitchen and bathrooms; and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the centre. I spent a lot of time in town and mornings and evenings at the centre. People with whom I interacted Out of the centre I met with Gedion (an adviser to the IHF council working in the education office) and Juma who is a lawyer and helps IHF on various legal issues and paperwork. I interacted a lot with the staff at the centre, as most issues, requests or queries were eventually passed on to me. Time spent on tasks In my case, I worked from the time I woke up to sleep.
