What does a protective or sealing casket mean?
These are terms that funeral homes used to use in describing the caskets they sold; it refers to a rubber gasket installed on some models of caskets. This gasket is essentially a delaying factor of the entry of outside elements into the casket. It is purely a personal decision whether your family wish to have a casket with a gasket, there are no laws requiring a casket to have this feature. Occasionally, under special circumstances it is necessary to use a casket with a gasket. For example, when shipping a casket with the remains in it to a foreign destination, the government of the destination country often requires a gasket on the casket. Also, the airlines require this feature on a casket that contains the remains of a person that may contain airborne pathogens.
