What does a priest or deacon do?
A better question might be: What doesn’t a priest or deacon do? Deacons and priests counsel, teach, and administer parishes and schools, work secular jobs and volunteer at the Church. There are clergy who work with fire departments, police stations, and state and federal governments as chaplains. Some work as lawyers or fly planes. Many are artists, writers, and musicians, while others study astronomy, physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, and other sciences. The most important thing that deacons and priests do is celebrate the sacraments with the people of God. That is what they are ordained to do. Outside of that, they are free to make their career and their ministry anything they want it to be.
