What does a PPTP connection / VPN do?
PPTP can be used to establish an encrypted connection from a computer anywhere on the Internet to our docklands network. This is most commonly used by our clients who wish to administer their servers but do not have a fixed IP address to access them from. The PPTP connection effectively provides them with a fixed IP address which they can use to access the servers, thus allowing the firewall rules to be configured more securely (to deny others access to manage the server). PPTP may also be useful in situations which do use a fixed IP address as the encryption will help to protect sensitive data and passwords from interception.
