What does A positive blood type mean?
The ABO blood antigen classification is based upon the expression of certain complex sugars that are found on the surface of your cells. These sugars are found on the surface of all cells not just blood cells, but they have become important because the presence or absence of the sugar helps determine the type of blood that you can receive in blood transfusions. Humans are not the only organisms that make these sugars and these sugars are made by plants and other animals and we are exposed to the sugars in our environment and in the food that we eat. The blood type that you display is determined by a single gene trait that makes a protein that helps create the sugar. For people with A blood type, one type of sugar is added, for people with B blood type a different sugar is added and for people with O blood type a sugar is not added.
