What does a Phi Beta Kappa Association do?
In general, Phi Beta Kappa is devoted to the promotion of the liberal arts. PBK Chapters can do this in a direct way, by encouraging changes to curricula on college campuses and by electing members who are liberally educated. The nice thing about PBK Associations, however, is that they are necessarily community-based. In a large sense, an Association fosters the liberal arts within their local community. There are several ways in which this can be accomplished. For example, the first Associations concentrated on hosting cosial and cultural events, lectures, and discussions of public issues for their members. While these activities continue to be popular, many Associations today also engage in community outreach by sponsoring academic award for local students; scholarships for high school, college and graduate students; and programs that foster the liberal arts.
