What does a PhD in Creative Writing consist of?
The Creative Writing PhD at The University of Manchester consists of a creative component and a critical component. The creative component is either a completed novel, or a completed volume of poetry or short stories. The critical component is a 30,000 word work of literary or cultural criticism which related in some way to the creative work. One of the distinguishing features of our Creative Writing PhD is that we expect the quality and nature of the critical component to be comparable to that produced by PhD students in English or American Studies. We do not encourage students to write critical work which is primarily self-reflective.
