What does a metalliferous mining operations (underground) (level 2) trainee do?
A metalliferous mining operations (underground) (level 2) trainee is involved in: • a broad range of tasks – the options available make it difficult to separate all areas • extracting, loading and transporting minerals, which include coal, metal ore, mineral sand and rock for construction purposes. Most trainees will work towards becoming miners.The term ‘mining’ includes quarrying, which is the extraction of rock for construction. As an underground miner you must generally be able to: • cut drives into the ore body using pneumatic equipment • drill holes with hand or machine mounted pneumatic or hydraulic drills according to plans devised by production geologists or mining engineers • load ore into mine cars, ships, trucks or conveyors for transport to underground crushers or to the surface • rockbolt the walls and roofs and erect timber or steel sets, pillars, arches to support the rock • install vertical shafts and ventilation rises for air circulation.
