What does a massage therapist do for myofascial release?
During a myofascial release session, the massage therapist guides stretching of the fascia based on body feedback. This feedback helps the massage therapist understand how much force to use in which direction. The massage therapist stretches a small area at a time, using two fingers to stretch a part of a muscle. Most of the time, the massage therapist can find sore spots (Myofascial Trigger Points) by touch, which is helpful when the client does not know where the sore spots are. Over time, these sore spots are reduced, and progress is measured by a decrease in pain and improved posture. It is important to note that myofascial release is not massage, even though it may be performed by a massage therapist. Myofascial release equalizes tension throughout the body; whereas massage is targeted to specific areas.
